By organizing the seminar about GMO on December 10, 2008 and starting the poll in the web page the aim of the ministry was to promote the discussion on GMO growing and distributing in Latvia and to find out the opinion of society about it.
„The great activity of participants and additional questions on GMO issue received in the ministry lately shows the interest of society and the will to take part in the decision making. It shows that people are not indifferent to impact of GMO on environment and food,” says Raimonds Vejonis.
The recent data shows that 95% votes are against the GMO growing in territory of Latvia, 94% are against using GMO in feed and 96% - against GMO use in food. 91% considers that Latvia should be GMO free zone.
The poll results will be summarized and it will be one of the indicators which will show the opinion of Latvians on GMO use in our state. It will help to build the national policy in the level of government and in the meetings in European Union.
