On July 1, 2009 the seminar „Use of renewable energy resources and action plan for increasing energy efficiency in Latvia” was held in the ministry of Environment, where scientists offered some solutions for increasing energy efficiency and use of renewable energy resources.

Ministry of Environment in cooperation with Baltic Environmental forum organizes informative meeting about creation of protected sea territories (AJT) in territorial waters of Latvia. Meeting will be held in July 9, in the ministry of Environment, Riga, Peldu street 25, room No 409.

On June 30, in the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Regulations Project prepared by the Ministry of the Environment “On state agency Latvian Environmental, Geological and Meteorological Agency and The Hazardous Waste Management State Agency liquidation and foundation of Latvian Environmental, Geological and Meteorological Centre” (hereafter – Direction Project) was accepted.

On June 30, in the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Regulations Project prepared by the Ministry of the Environment “Individual Regulations on Protection and Exploitation of the nature reserve “Daugava near Kaibala”” (hereafter – Regulations Project) was accepted.

On June 25 in Baku the government treaty on cooperation in the environment protection between Republic of Latvia and Republic of Azerbaijan was signed by the minister of Environment of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis ans minister of Ecology and natural resources Husseingulu Baghirov.

On July 1, 2009 the seminar „Use of renewable energy resources and action plan for increasing energy efficiency in Latvia” will be organized in the ministry of the Environment, Peldu Street 25, room 409.

From July 1, 2009 Environment State Bureau takes over the functions of Radiation Safety Centre except monitoring of environmental radioactive contamination and individual dosimetric measurement which will be performed by Latvian Environmental, Geological and Meteorological Agency.

From June 18 to 19 in Italy the conference and political discussiona about GMO free regions were organized. The aim of the conference was to gather information about the possibilities in the EU states to create GMO free regions considering the regulations of EU which do not give rights for member states to proclaim them ar GMO free territories. Conference was attended by the EU member states and regions which want to be GMO free zones or don’t want to allow the growth of GMO in their territory.

On June 18 after long discussions and search of compromises Saeima has accepted amendments on Law on circulation of genetically modified organisms. Amendments define that local governments will be able to decide about GMO growing in their territory and customers will be better informed about GMO products in shops and supermarkets.

On May 28, in the meeting of the Secretaries of the State, Cabinet of Ministers Regulations Project prepared by the Ministry of the Environment “Amendments on CM regulations No 139 on February 14, 2006 “Regulations on requirements of using and labelling particular devices and products containing dangerous chemical substances and on the list of environmental hazardous products” was announced (hereafter – Regulations Project).

On May 28, in the meeting of the Secretaries of the State, Cabinet of Ministers Regulations Project prepared by the Ministry of the Environment “Individual Regulations on Protection and Exploitation of Nature Park „Pape”” was announced (hereafter – Regulations Project).

Minister of Environment of Latvia Mr Vejonis on May 28 and 29 participates in the meeting with ministers of Environment of the Baltic states, which is held in Alytus Region, Lithuania. There will be discussed three importand environmental issues concerning all Baltic states.

On May 26, in the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Regulations Project prepared by the Ministry of the Environment “Individual Regulations on Protection and Exploitation of Nature Reserve “Sedas purvs”” was announced.

On May 19, in the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Regulations Project prepared by the Ministry of the Environment “Regulations on the individual protection and exploitation of the nature park Embute” was announced (hereafter – Regulations Project).

Tomorrow, on May 20, minister of the Environment Raimonds Vejonis will present diplomas for customs officers for their contribution in the implementation of Washington convention „The Convention in International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES) and express his gratitude for job well done.
